[edit] Overview
Whirlwind is a pinball machine produced in 1990 by Williams. One of Pat Lawlor's early classics known for its speed and flow, Whirlwind puts the player in a storm-chaser, roaming windy Kansas. He must move the storm by shooting the directions shown on the center playfield's compass. Once all of the directions have been spotted, the storm begins, complete with wind from a backbox-mounted fan and 3 spinning discs on the playfield. To send the storm away the player locks a ball using the Skyway (right) ramp; after three storms (locking three balls), 3-ball multiball begins.
Whirlwind also features six pop bumpers (two sets of six), as well as a pair of "Cellar Door" scoops. The right scoop, Super Cellar Door, gives the player an award when lit. Collecting all seven awards and shooting the Super Cellar Door again awards the Mega Door Bonus.
[edit] Trivia
- Features Lawlor's trademark Big Red Button in the hand of the van-driving storm chaser shown on the backglass.
- The camcorder-wielding boy in the minivan was originally wearing a Chicago Cubs hat in early versions of the backglass. Williams erased the unlicensed trademark by strategically applying a Williams 'W' logo sticker to the translite.
- A small number of Whirlwind playfields were made using Williams' Diamond Plate clearcoating process.
